Ernie Els has produced one of golf’s more remarkable moments with a shocker of a putt and a brilliant save.
In the second round of the 2013 Wyndham Championship, Ernie Els was just off the green after two and used his putter to push the ball away from the hole, allowing for it to hopefully come on to the green late and then roll down the incline towards the hole – a right-angle triangle pathway for the ball.
His attempt went awry when the ball stayed off the green leaving him stranded with a downhill run and the embarrassment of having putted and never touched the surface of the green.
What happens next shows why Els has been such a prolific winner on the tour.
It also shows that when they go in, they go in.
Commentators then had to grapple with the question of whether it was a two-putt save, a one-putt wonder or a no-putt.
