Then Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Premier Jay Weatherill signing the Gonski deal in June.

An additional $17 million will be injected into South Australia’s school system next year after the State Government brought forward part of the Gonski funding package.

Premier Jay Weatherill announced the change this morning at St Anthony’s School in Edwardstown.

The move means an extra $10.2 million for state schools will flow into the system next year, along with $3.7 million for Catholic schools and $3.2 million for private schools.

Two-thirds of the $17 million will come from the Federal Government, with the other third paid by the State Government.

The money is part of the Federal Government’s Gonski school funding and reform package that SA signed up for earlier this year.

The total Gonski agreement – now known as the Better Schools Plan – is worth about $1.1 billion between next year and 2019 for the State’s education system, with most of that backloaded into the final years of the deal.

“The Better Schools Plan is about ensuring every child at school receives more individual attention to best realise their talents,” Weatherill said this morning.

“What we are announcing today means that more of that individual attention will start sooner.”
