Tanunda will soon be cooking with gas; construction of a natural gas pipeline to the Barossa Valley town will start in September.
Natural gas distribution company Envestra announced the construction timeline for the $9 million project today.
“This will involve the installation of a 2km high pressure lateral from the Moomba to Adelaide pipeline, a 4km trunk main within the town and 24km of distribution network,” Envestra’s managing director, Ian Little said. “Industrial and commercial consumers will be the first to be connected to natural gas, commencing in May 2014.
“It may take up to three years to connect potential customers in the town,” he added, “but we will be looking to supply households located on the new distribution network, as soon as possible.”
“We expect to connect around 2,000 domestic consumers and 40 businesses over a 20 year period.
“In addition, we are aware of a potential new subdivision being developed on the edge of the town with 700 housing blocks being created.
“Our aim would be to make natural gas available throughout the subdivision.”
Community meetings will be held in Tanunda in March 2014 to inform residents of the proposed layout of the gas network and timetable for its construction.
“We anticipate strong support from businesses and residents wanting to sign up to use environment friendly natural gas,” Little said.
A map showing the pipeline route, and the area to be reticulated with natural gas is available at www.naturalgasintanunda.com.au from tomorrow.
