CAROL FAULKNER: In answer to the question posed by InDaily (at the end of the article, Murdoch and Rudd exchange punches, August 7, 2013), yes, I do think certain sections of the media are guilty of political bias.

The 1975 media campaign against Gough Whitlam is the stuff of history books.

The more recent campaign against Julia Gillard was relentless.

I’m sick of both major parties, but that’s not the point. It is definitely not the role, nor should it be the prerogative of media chiefs to attempt to sway public opinion on which way to vote.

What irks me most is the self-interest that drives such bias. As one historian wrote of the December ’75 election outcome:

“Amongst conservatives, there was satisfaction, relief and rejoicing. During the previous three years, many of them had held to the view that Labor had no right to govern and that the course it had set itself of the equitable distribution of wealth was inimical to their best interests”.

In that regard, nothing has changed.
