The Hawke Centre’s Kerry Packer Civic Gallery presents Nan ngelar winamen: Two hearts beat ‘n time featuring the artwork of Muriel ‘Mumthelang’ Van Der Byl AM and Julianne ‘Ambo’ Jakaitis. United in their aboriginality they have come together to share stories of family, life and culture through art.
Their paintings are executed in a myriad of colours and media that together form a kaleidoscope that acknowledges the spirits of the ancestors that occupy the landscape, and reflects the spiritual intensity of the lands, skies, waters, birds and animals – all symbolic of their personal connections with their country.
Muriel paints on silk recounting the stories handed down through the generations and told to her by her grandmother. Julianne paints the stories of her heritage on her voyage of discovery, reflecting her birth-right and affirming her cultural identity.
This exhibition will be open 12 August until 11 September, and is presented as part of the SALA Festival. The Kerry Packer Civic Gallery is open weekdays, 9am – 5pm.
