Monfries gathered the ball on the forward 50, faked to go right, hooked back onto his left and banged it toward goal.
It appeared to be going through for a point before it took a huge right angle off-break through the goals to set up a famous Port Adelaide win.
In other AFL news, the match review panel on Monday charged Geelong’s Corey Enright with misconduct for standing on the leg of North Melbourne’s Scott Thompson during their round-19 clash at Etihad Stadium.
Enright has been offered a $900 sanction with an early plea following the incident which occurred late in Friday night’s game.
The highly decorated defender, a triple-premiership player, two-time club champion and four-time All-Australian, hasn’t been suspended in his 261-game career.

West Coast captain Darren Glass can accept a reprimand and 93.75 points against his future record for striking Gold Coast’s Dion Prestia during the second quarter of Saturday’s game at Patersons Stadium.
The level-two striking charge against Glass draws a penalty of 125 demerit points and a one-match ban.
Glass has one match suspension within the past two years but this does not impact on this offence, the panel said.
An early plea would reduce the four-time All-Australian’s penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points.
A match-day report against Gold Coast hard man Campbell Brown has been thrown out.
The 204-game veteran is free to play in Saturday night’s home game against Melbourne at Metricon Stadium.

Brown had been booked for engaging in rough conduct against West Coast’s Blayne Wilson in Saturday’s game at Patersons Stadium.
Wilson was bending down to pick up the ball and Brown made minor high contact, the panel said in a statement.
“It was the view of the panel that Brown’s actions were a legitimate attempt to win possession and no further action was required,” the panel said.
Brisbane’s Mitch Golby has been offered a one-game ban for striking St Kilda’s Tom Curren during the second quarter of Saturday night’s Gabba clash.
Golby can reduce his penalty of 225 demerit points and a two-match ban for the level-three striking charge by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-game sanction with an early plea.
Geelong’s Josh Caddy can also accept a $900 sanction for making negligent contact with an umpire.
Prestia has been offered a $1950 sanction for making reckless contact with an umpire, for pushing West Coast’s Andrew Gaff into the path of an umpire during the second quarter of Saturday’s game.
A striking charge against Collingwood’s back-up ruckman Ben Hudson will be heard by the VFL tribunal on Tuesday night.
Hudson, 34, and two-time premiership ruckman Darren Jolly, 31, both made comebacks from injury in Collingwood’s VFL side last weekend as 19-year-old second-gamer Brodie Grundy had 19 hit-outs in the senior team’s AFL win over Essendon.
