The Red Cross Letters

Poignant letters capturing the anguish of war are set to come to life in a new production featured in the Word Adelaide festival.

The Red Cross Letters is a collaboration between Word Adelaide, the State Theatre Company of South Australia and the State Library. Two performances will take place in the wood-panelled Mortlock Chamber on Sunday August 18, with some of Adelaide’s rising stars to bring the letters to life.

The production is a performed reading of a selection of letters sent to the South Australian Red Cross Information Bureau during World War I by Australians seeking news of their missing or injured loved ones, along with the replies. The correspondence includes accounts from military commanders, medical staff, volunteers, soldiers and mates who fought alongside the lost or wounded.

Assembled and edited by playwright Verity Laughton, The Red Cross Letters will be directed by State Theatre Company artistic director Geordie Brookman includes and a live score performed by Matthew Gregan. Brookman says the State Theatre Company is delighted to take part in the collaboration.

“We couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with Word Adelaide and the State Library on this amazing project. It’s an honour to be given the opportunity to delve into a difficult moment in the country’s history,” Brookman says.
