Votes driving Holden help

Jul 31, 2013, updated May 09, 2025

RICHARD ABBOTT: As a self-employed professional I know that no government will ever be interested in assisting me, as there is only one vote involved. So it is a concern that with Holden it is votes, rather than economic reality, that is the driving force behind government assistance.

Surely governments learned the harsh inevitable reality from the demise of Mitsubishi, as all that has now changed from their closure is the date, the make and the model.

Maybe instead of financially assisting the company today, that proposed money should be reserved for assisting workers as soon as the closing date is announced. At least this will cost the taxpayer far less in the long run.
