Southern Right Whales holiday in South Australia

Jul 26, 2013, updated May 09, 2025

With such clean, diverse and abundant coastal waters around the state, it’s no wonder South Australia is such a great destination for whale watching.

The annual breeding migration sees up to 100 Southern Right Whales frolicking in South Australian waters between May and October each year. South Australian waters offer Southern Right Whales the perfect environment to breed, with temperature climate and ideal water depth.

Head of Bight, near the Nullabor Plain on the state’s west coast, is arguably one of the world’s most spectacular spot to see the whales during their migration and visitors can catch amazing views of the mammals from the boardwalks that lead to the towering Bunda Cliffs overlooking the Southern Ocean. The Interpretive Centre at Head of Bight provides visitors with information to make the most of their whale-watching experience.

The Fleurieu Peninsula, and in particular Victor Harbor, also provides great opportunities to whale watch and visitors can do this in style on an exhilarating boat ride, with Big Duck Boat Tours. Hop aboard the expedition-style water craft and explore areas inaccessible by land and an enjoy viewing whales in their natural environment.

Kangaroo Island, south of Cape Jervis, also provides excellent vantage points for whale watching. If you take the ferry to Kangaroo Island, keep a look out for whales while you cross Backstairs Passage, with luck you may also see dolphins and other sea life.
