Targa Adelaide adds new rookie rally element

Jul 25, 2013, updated May 09, 2025

This year, the Targa Adelaide Rally (21 to 25 August) will be introducing a new format for entrants called the Rookie Rally. This new tarmac rally category has already proven popular with 12 new entrants signing up so far.

The Rookie Rally is designed to remove the pressure of the full Targa Adelaide Rally competition but still sees entrants integrated within the main competition cars.

Rookie Rally competitors often undergo mentoring, tips and technical advice by seasoned competitors. Rookie Rally entrants participate in the Wednesday night, Intercontinental Targa Night Stage at the Showgrounds where they get the opportunity to race in front of 23,000 spectators. They then tackle over 160 competitive kilometres of Adelaide Hills Roads for two of the following four days of the Targa Adelaide Rally.

A great example of a Rookie Rally competitor looking to get into the sport of tarmac rally is Mitchell Lucasz.Mitchell is following his father, Andre’s, footsteps. Andre is a seasoned and successful rally competitor and started Mitchell out in circuit racing to gain some good experience before making the progression to Tarmac Rally.

Mitchell is a local competitor from Crafers and is thoroughly looking forward to this year’s Targa Adelaide Rally and the Rookie Rally event.
