Tarpeena-based Timberlink has been offered more than $7.8 million to upgrade its sawmill in the State’s south east.

The State Government grant has been offered as part of the $27 million South East Forestry Partnerships Program as assistance for the Timberlink upgrade, expected to cost the company nearly $16 million.

“Industry assistance is on a dollar-for-dollar basis provided over two years, payable upon key milestones being achieved as defined in the funding agreement,” Manufacturing Minister Tom Kenyon said last night.

“Timberlink is a major employer in the region and the company estimates it will need to employ 28 new staff as a result of this project, which is part of a major upgrade to bring the plant up to world standards.

“The upgrade is expected to increase the company’s sawlog cut to 575,000 cubic metres annually.”

Kenyon made the announcement at an industry forum in Mount Gambier when releasing the draft Stage 2 report into the south-east forestry industry by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

“The State Government commissioned the study to identify a sustainable roadmap and achievable market opportunities for higher valued-added activity in the forestry sector.

“The final report is due for release later this year.”
