SEAN O’MAHONEY: Reading Sally Boxall’s letter regarding the Riverbank plan made me cringe (Shocked at scale of Riverbank plans, InDaily, July 4, 2013).
For years Adelaide has been held back by citizens complaining about progress and opposing change. It’s healthy to exercise caution when confronted with a new proposal but in this city it has gone on for too long.
I was at the free lunch when the Riverbank proposal was put forward and I expect it to be one of the greatest things to happen to Adelaide.
Each and every new bridge, park and building serves a purpose in the plan and is about encouraging connectivity. In regards to Sally’s comments on the new bridges, could the narrow university bridge really cope with an influx of people? Currently the Riverbank consists of scattered, unrelated and inaccessible places which is a great hindrance to tourists trying to work out what to do once they’ve explored every nook and cranny of Hahndorf.
As for Sally’s comments on whether the money should be spent on services: services stop when the money stops; infrastructure is there forever to be used by anyone in rain or shine.
This is an opportunity that SA cannot miss and we better make sure it is done right.
