MALCOLM KING: Re your article, Rau hits out at anti-population growth lobby (InDaily, July 4, 2013), it is bizarre that the Stable Population Party (SPP) continues to argue against population growth as if South Australia was a burgeoning African nation.
The SPP wants to create a one in/one out immigration system, stop building houses for first home buyers, stop the Kiwis arriving, reduce child support payments and especially parental leave, stop 457 visas and slash our international student numbers. It aims to fulfill its ‘no growth’ mantra by winding back capitalism.
Much of the anti-populationist rhetoric and ‘policy’ consists of accumulating a staggering amount of horrifying news (much of it has nothing to do with population) and then tempering it with a slim ray of hope such as closing the borders.
Population growth is climbing in Africa but slowing across most of Europe and America and falling in Japan, Italy and Russia. Australia’s birth rate is well below replacement. The key demographic phenomenon facing developing and developed nations is not people but the ageing of their populations.
