CAROL FAULKNER:  Planning Minister John Rau’s comments to an audience of developers are a clear indication that stable population proponents are making an impact (Rau hits out at anti-population growth lobby, InDaily 4 July 2013).

It would be easy to condemn Mr Rau’s use of gross misrepresentation and mockery, but what it really shows is fear – fear of the rising awareness among ordinary citizens that the State Government’s population growth policy, Prosperity through People,  is not in our best interests.

By all means, let’s discuss openly the pros and cons of deliberately encouraging migration-based population growth. That’s what letter-writers have been saying all along. It’s long overdue, and the first question would be, why wasn’t the public invited to debate the issue before the policy was adopted?

And please, Minister, let’s have honesty and maturity on both sides of the argument – I haven’t heard anyone except yourself spouting tosh about China’s one-child policy and banning all immigration.
