Shocked at scale of Riverbank plans

SALLY BOXALL: I was ‘gobsmacked’ by the scale of the proposed plans for the Riverbank when I attended the recent lavish free launch at the Convention Centre. I was confounded to realise there were no City Councillors in attendance, the ACC does not appear on the feedback form for the ‘Draft Greater Riverbank Precinct Implementation Plan’ and apparently our local MP, Rachel Sanderson, has not been involved or consulted. This plan has been commissioned by a Government which may well be out of office at the next state election.

The plan gives no idea of the likely cost of the various components including such items as extra pedestrian/bike bridges including two in close proximity to the uni footbridge and a new swimming pool within a couple of kilometres of the Aquatic Centre. Existing infrastructure was mysteriously missing in some areas.

I can see that the Government is keen to keep construction going. If we had the funds they would be far better spent providing health and other vital services. We still have to pay for the relocation of various health related tertiary schools and services from the east to the west of the city and to remediate the RAH site. This will have a major effect on the workers, residents and visitors in the East End. Adelaide and SA will never reach the population of the eastern states or cities which our planners are seeking to emulate.

I urge people to comment on these proposals before the consultation ends on July 31. The display is at the University of Adelaide Hub Central to July 11 and the Convention Centre from July 15-26.
