Benefits of electric bikes

PERI STRATHEARN: I began commuting five kilometres to and from work on an electric bike a few months ago and would heartily recommend the experience (More power for electric bikes, InDaily, July 1, 2013).

It makes economic sense – I paid about $800 for my bike, the same as I would have for a rust-bucket of a car, but don’t have to register or fuel it. Riding keeps you fit, but the electric motor keeps you from busting your guts getting up and down hills or, in my case, across a road bridge.

But perhaps best of all is the experience itself: the whistle of the wind in your ears, the splash of fog on your face and the complete lack of noise or exhaust you leave in your wake as you suck the fresh air into your lungs. An added bonus is that, as the only owner of such a bike in my town, it’s almost unstealable. Get into it!
