Andrew Denton quits TV

Andrew Denton is quitting television to pursue other interests, but the maker of some of Australia’s most popular shows has left the door open to return one day.

The former host of ABC’s Enough Rope announced on Wednesday he had sold his share of Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder to co-owners Michael Cordell and Nick Murray.

“It’s been a full-on 13 years,” Denton said in a statement today.

“For the next little while at least, I am going to try my hand at being Australia’s most unlikely, least-laid-back, hippie.”

In February 2012, Denton merged his company Zapruder’s Other Films with Cordell Jigsaw, then-owned by Cordell and Murray.

Denton said he was “leaving behind something of which I am immensely proud”.

“The measures of success in our industry are ratings and awards and we have racked up our share of both,” Denton said.

“In an industry that can be brutal, I consider it an achievement to have provided a nurturing environment for good people and ideas.”

But he also hinted he could return to television, securing a “first-look” deal with the company in the event he decides to make a comeback.

“We’re sad to see Andrew go, but his DNA will always remain embedded in CJZ,” Cordell said.

Denton is credited with creating popular TV shows such as Enough Rope, Elders, The Gruen Transfer/Planet, and The Chaser’s CNNNN and Election Chaser.
