AFL Round 12 snapshot

AFL finals hopes rose and fell on the boot of Richmond and former crows ruckman Ivan Maric.

THEY SAID IT: “The rule, I’m sure, says something about: ‘If you don’t dispose of the ball correctly, it is incorrect disposal’. We are a little bit bamboozled by that.” Carlton coach Mick Malthouse was fuming about the umpiring in his side’s narrow loss to Hawthorn on Friday night.

STATS THAT MATTER: Hawthorn have notched 10 wins in a row for the first time since 1983-84. If they beat West Coast and Brisbane in the next two rounds, they’ll equal their club record streak of 12 ahead of their round-15 clash with Geelong.

MAN OF THE ROUND: Underrated Fremantle midfielder David Mundy kicked two crucial goals late in the third quarter, among his 27 disposals, to ensure the Dockers made comfortable work of Brisbane on Saturday.

KEY MOMENT: Richmond ruckman Ivan Maric plucked the ball directly from a boundary throw-in and snapped a goal early in the last quarter to snuff out a threat of an Adelaide comeback at the MCG on Saturday.

TALKING POINT: With young forward-ruckman Joe Daniher impressing in his second AFL game against Gold Coast on Saturday night, will Tom Bellchambers get back in the Bombers side?

TRIBUNAL WATCH: Hawthorn’s Luke Hodge should be cleared for the collision which fractured Marc Murphy’s cheekbone. But a later incident in which he delivered a high bump on Lachie Henderson will be scrutinised. Greater Western Sydney’s Jeremy Cameron might be cited for a round-arm swipe which downed Port Adelaide’s Chad Wingard. A light jab by Fremantle’s Stephen Hill to the face of Brisbane’s Andrew Raines might also attract attention, although was probably too soft to constitute a strike.

KEY INJURIES: Marc Murphy (Carl, cheekbone), Michael Hurley (Ess, wrist), Tom Lynch (GC, PCL), Michael Rischitelli (GC, elbow), Lance Franklin (Haw, hand), Travis Boak (Port, finger), Cameron Hitchcock (Port, ankle).

UNDER PRESSURE: Carlton, coming off tight back-to-back losses and barely hanging on to eighth spot, have the bye next weekend before tough clashes with Sydney and Collingwood. The ever-present pressure on Melbourne hasn’t decreased over their bye weekend, with Jeff Kennett urging the AFL to help him step straight into their presidency.
