Density argument overly simplistic

GREG OATES: Mr Szlapek-Sewillo suggests that home-owners concerned about proposed increases in housing density are holding back housing affordability for the younger generation (Low Density Living not the Answer, InDaily, June 13, 2013). As another young person also planning to enter the housing market, I find this opinion overly simplistic.

Current plans to boost the South Australian population by over 500,000 by 2040 will overwhelm valid efforts to improve housing affordability, and will no doubt cause significant densification and sprawl that even Mr Szlapek-Sewillo will not be able to dismiss.

I acknowledge the property industry has an important role to play in supplying affordable homes to provide for any population growth and also to account for any downwards trend in the number of people per dwelling. There is also a good case for locating many of these properties near to existing infrastructure and services, and for offering choice in the size of the dwelling.

However, all this would be more sustainable, affordable and liveable if we were to transition to a stable population. Population growth of around 100,000 people would occur over this path in South Australia.
