Public input is being sought for a new South Australian industry code that will seek to end confusion about free-range eggs.
A discussion paper proposes that the code include conditions such as a maximum of 1500 layer hens per hectare on an outdoor range, unrestricted access to outdoor areas for hens during daylight hours, adequate shelter in outdoor areas, and a ban on induced moulting.
However, the code will be voluntary. An explanation on the website of the Attorney-General’s Department states that this is “so as to not restrict other growers (who may comply with other accreditations) from labelling their product as “Free Range” Eggs”.
In launching public consultation on the issue yesterday, Minister for Business Services and Consumers John Rau said SA egg producers were frustrated by different “free-range” definitions between the states, while shoppers were confused by current labelling.
“We will introduce a code for South Australian egg producers so that shoppers will be able to clearly identify eggs that meet the new SA free range standard,” he said in a statement.
Deadline for submissions on the discussion paper up until July 12.
