AFL Round 10 snapshot

MARK Neeld’s job hangs by a thread entering today’s Melbourne board meeting, but the Demons coach insists there are signs of hope from the AFL club’s latest flogging. Neeld has coached just five wins in 32 games (one form 10 this year), his side was beaten by almost 100 points; yet he insisted post-match he expected only a routine board meeting and would be shocked if the axe fell.

THEY SAID IT: “The people in front of us stood up and bowed. I felt like joining in. If he’s not the best player I’ve ever seen, he’s pretty close.” – Geelong coach Chris Scott on Gold Coast’s ex-Cat Gary Ablett, who had 34 disposals and kicked two goals including a candidate for goal of the year in Geelong’s 52-point win on Saturday night at Simonds Stadium.

STATS THAT MATTER: Port Adelaide have started the season with five consecutive wins, followed by five straight defeats.

MAN OF THE ROUND: After a nightmare week in the wake of racial taunts directed at him by a 13-year-old Collingwood fan and also by Collingwood president Eddie McGuire, Sydney’s Adam Goodes booted four goals in a starring role in his side’s 44-point win over Essendon at the SCG.

KEY MOMENT: Veteran Daniel Giansiracusa put Western Bulldogs 19 points ahead with a sensational snap from a tight angle in the final term against Port Adelaide in Darwin on Saturday night and two late goals from Port couldn’t stop the Bulldogs notching their third win of the season and second in a row.

TALKING POINT: Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson is calling for two goal umpires at each end following his side’s seven-point loss at home to Fremantle. A shot at goal by Adelaide’s Patrick Dangerfield was initially ruled a six-pointer but this was overturned following a controversial video review which showed the ball did touch the post. Sanderson says the reviews are taking too long. TRIBUNAL WATCH: nil.

KEY INJURIES: Chris Judd (Carl, hamstring), Dean Brogan (GWS, back), Alex Silvagni (Freo, ankle), David Mackay (Adel, hip), Scott Gumbleton (Ess, ankle), Ben Howlett (Ess, shoulder), Courtenay Dempsey (Ess, ribs), Tommy Walsh (Syd, hamstring), Koby Stevens (WB, thigh), Tom Williams (WB, shoulder), Jarrad Redden (Port, shoulder), Brandon Matera (GC, ankle), Nathan Wright (St K, back), James Frawley (Mel, hamstring).
