In 2026, the Adelaide Fringe guide is an intimidating 176-pages long. Who has the time? Dear reader, certainly not you. Instead, let crooner Hugh Sheridan guide you through the festival season, with his must-stop places in Adelaide.
CM: How many times have you performed at the Adelaide Fringe?
HS: Honestly, I have no idea, but I know we started the year Heather Croall took over as CEO, so easily nine or 10 years.
I do know it’s the first time in six years since California Crooners Club has performed in Adelaide.
What’s a misconception you had about Adelaide before you came here?
Well, I was born here so I have a fairly good understanding of the misconceptions my friends interstate have. It’s usually that we’re boring and inbred… they clearly have never been here! I encourage all my friends to fly down during Fringe as it’s the best time to fall in love with our beautiful city.
What’s special about the Fringe compared to other events in Australia?
Fringe is the largest festival in the southern hemisphere and the second-largest festival in the world. I think Adelaide is the most unique city for festivals, as the entire city is engulfed by the energy. Sometimes in other cities you don’t even know the festival was on until it’s over!
When you’re in Adelaide, where do you like to go for a drink?
I love finding new bars and cafes all the time. My current faves are Peel St and Leigh St towards the west end. I love Jennie Wine Bar! And Latteria makes the best cosmopolitan.
What about a nice dinner?
I love Fugazzi and I’m very keen to try Omada across the way.
Trattoria is a classic, Golden Boy, Africola and I adore 2KW…the triple-cooked potatoes are the best. I’m sure there are a lot of new places too!
How do you deal with hecklers?
I love them, keeps the show fun and me on my feet!
What other show at the Fringe would you recommend?
This year, I would recommend Shake It!, …Earnest?, Murder She Didn’t Write, GASHA, The Shamrocks and I’m keen to find some good comedy!
Hot Dub and History Of House are also must-dos as is Late Night Tuff Guy!
Hugh Sheridan is performing as part of California Crooners Club until March 9.
