The East End itinerary for people who don’t like itineraries
Coffee, vintage, gelato, dinner, drinks and a little bit of getting gloriously sidetracked – spend a whole day exploring Rundle Street East without ever needing to leave the precinct.
There’s a reason the East End is one of those Adelaide spots where “I’ll just pop in for an hour” so often turns into “wait, is it dinner time already?”
It’s ridiculously easy to wander here.
The streets are packed with independent shops, cafés, restaurants, bars and little discoveries – and 2026 has added even more reasons to explore, from new fashion names to fresh hospitality openings.
So forget the rigid itinerary. Think of this as a loose plan for a very good day.
9am – Start with coffee and carbs
First stop: Exchange.
“I find it hard to pass up Exchange,” Filter Store’s Christopher Arblaster says. “There is nothing quite like sitting outside on a crisp spring morning and enjoying a coffee and croissant as you contemplate the day ahead.”
He has a point.

10am – Take the long way
The trick to doing the East End properly? Don’t walk directly anywhere.
“You can wander in from the parklands or East Terrace, visit the Botanic Garden nearby, and then spend hours exploring the smaller streets and laneways,” Ovo’s John Milky says.
That’s the assignment.
11am – Go hunting for something you didn’t know you wanted
Now it’s time to shop, starting with Filter Store.
“My hope is that people will see clothes they find beautiful, or surprising, or maybe even both,” Arblaster says.
His current obsession? 1990s Gianni Versace shirting.
“The shirts tare some of the most beautiful in the world in my opinion, partly because of the fabrics (broken record), and partly because of the attention to detail.”
From there, keep exploring: Shop Pond, Midwest Trader, Assembly Label, Yaneth, Geranium, Hommey and the newer arrivals.
1pm – Lunch without leaving the neighbourhood
By now you’ll have worked up an appetite.
Arblaster’s picks are Nano Cafe – “another institution, run by people who take pride in what they do” – or The Laneway Social, East End.
2:30pm – Keep browsing
You’ve eaten. You have time. And there are still shops you haven’t entered.
Check out slow-luxury label Yaneth or hunt down vintage posters at Galeria Grafika. New businesses are adding fresh energy to streets that regulars thought they knew.
For Arblaster, that evolution is bittersweet – new arrivals inevitably mean saying goodbye to old favourites – but he says they’ve “definitely have brought new energy to the area”.
“Seeing people enjoy the sunshine as it hits the outside tables at Ember Coffee always makes me smile, while Burdette (a new small bar) has created a feeling of activity on Union Street.”
4pm – Entering the golden hour
Grab a matcha, coffee, juice or gelato at Ovo and settle in. “The daytime rush starts to disappear and the precinct becomes noticeably calmer,” Milky says.
“Once the street lights come on, Ebenezer Place takes on this warm, intimate atmosphere. It can almost feel romantic.”
6pm – Dinner
No need to relocate. Choose your own adventure from the East End’s restaurant roster, whether you’re after something casual, a long dinner or the beginning of a bigger night.
And if you’re taking Milky’s advice, Enoteca is one of his favourite dinner stops.
8pm – Make it a double
For drinks, Arblaster has a very specific formula.
“It’s hard to pass up the 1/2 punch of the Exeter Hotel followed by another at Smokelovers,” he says.
We’re not going to argue.
9:30pm – Obviously, gelato
Finish at Ovo. With its constantly rotating gelato flavours, there’s a legitimate reason to go back even if you’ve already been earlier.
The East End doesn’t really need a rigid itinerary. That’s kind of the point.
Just start walking.
