Salisbury is hosting a range of events for Harmony Week from March 17, culminating in a major celebration at the Salisbury Community Hub on Friday, March 28. The free, family-friendly event includes an intercultural parade, performances, and a mini-market featuring food and goods from refugee and migrant entrepreneurs.
Mayor Gillian Aldridge says “the City of Salisbury is a place where people from all backgrounds feel welcome”.
“Harmony Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the many cultures that make our city so special. I encourage everyone to attend this incredible celebration of diversity,” she says.
One-third of Salisbury residents were born overseas, and more than 32 per cent speak a language other than English at home.
Performers include the award-winning ensemble Farhan Shah and Sufi Oz, Cuban-born trumpeter Lazaro Numa, and First Nations singer-songwriter Vonda Last. There will also be a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony led by Uncle Allen Edwards Sr, an address from Minister for Tourism and Multicultural Affairs Zoe Bettison, and live multilingual radio coverage from Radio Italiana and PBA FM.
Pastor David Fletcher from JYC Aboriginal Social Group, which leads the parade each year, says it “is a unique time to walk together with hundreds of community members, celebrating all cultures”.
Attendees are encouraged to wear cultural attire or orange. More information about Harmony Week events is available online.
