For one remarkable week each year, South Australia becomes the heart of Australian football — and in 2026, SAHMRI will be its visible pulse.

As part of the AFL Gather Round Festival of Footy, SAHMRI’s iconic North Terrace building will transform into a striking red “beating heart” on the Adelaide skyline.

For 10 minutes every half hour from 6:00pm to midnight, the installation will quite literally bring the city to life — a rhythmic, glowing symbol of connection, community and cutting-edge research.

More than a spectacle, the light show reflects SAHMRI’s role as the beating heart of health and medical research in South Australia — advancing breakthroughs in heart and brain health, nutrition, performance and lifelong wellbeing.

For those wanting to go deeper, SAHMRI is also hosting a special community luncheon, Where Elite Sport Meets Elite Science, on Friday 10 April. With limited tickets remaining, guests will hear directly from leading researchers exploring the science behind performance and wellbeing.
