Alexandrina Council is partnering with Port Elliot Primary School to host the region’s first School Open Street event. On the morning of April 2, Cameron Street near the school will be closed to cars to create a safe space for children and families to walk and ride.
“We’re excited to trial this initiative which we hope will foster community participation, involve neighbouring residents, and encourage children and families to engage in active transport. This is all about having fun while supporting kids’ independence and wellbeing,” Mayor Keith Parkes says.
The trial aligns with the council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan and its goal to create connected communities.
It also complements the state government’s Way2Go program, which promotes bike and road safety. Similar events have run successfully interstate. The council says that if the Port Elliot trial is successful, it may partner with other schools in the district to run similar events.
