Ambient and world music pioneers Not Drowning Waving are visiting Hindmarsh for a performance at The Gov this May. Led by David Bridie, the eight-piece band will be joined by Papua New Guinean musician Sir George Telek and other performers from the Pacific region.
The group is touring following a series of sold-out shows in Sydney and Melbourne. The performance features material from their latest album Malira alongside songs from their 1990 record Tabaran. The National Film and Sound Archive recently added the album to the Sounds of Australia registry to acknowledge its cultural significance as a collaboration between Australian and Papua New Guinean artists.
Bridie says the group originally reunited for a limited run of shows.
“We got back together last year to celebrate 50 years of PNG’s independence,” he says. “We thought it would just be for a couple of shows but the process inspired a new album and now this tour.”
