Adelaide Ballet, the state’s only professional ballet company, will present its inaugural season this August with the Australian premiere of Murray Whispers. The new production, inspired by the Murray River, runs from August 15 to 17 at ILA, Adelaide’s Centre for Immersive Art and Light.
Choreographed by company co-founders and artistic directors Sarah Humeniuk and Rejane Garcia, Murray Whispers draws from their individual experiences with the iconic waterway.
“Murray Whispers is a deeply personal piece for us – a meeting of two lived experiences: one rooted and the other discovering,” they say.
“For audiences, it will be a performance that taps into every sense, with the river’s changing flow, pulse and beauty exquisitely expressed through a fusion of dance, music and visual imagery.”
The production showcases a wealth of local artistic talent. Dancers will move to an original score by composer Ashley Hribar, with visuals of the Murray by Adelaide creatives Thomas Oates and Scott Baskett displayed on ILA’s LED screens. Costumes are designed and crafted by South Australia’s own Kira Bayliss and Alice Ong. After a sold-out work-in-progress season in 2024, the finished production makes its premiere in The Light Room.
