The Australian Calisthenics Theatre Company (ACTC) is back with a 90-minute show that is a tribute to the force of Mother Nature, told through story, acrobatics, and live music.
One hundred and twenty elite dancers from across Australia will take to the stage, accompanied by Ten Tenors star JD Smith and original music by Adelaide’s Chloe Castledine.
ACTC Artistic Director Brooke Brown says the show “is about showcasing the strength and power of this predominantly female sport”.
Calisthenics is usually based around competition, but Mother Nature highlights the theatrical side in an arena setting.
“Creating an opportunity where any calisthenics dancer across Australia can participate is our way to bring calisthenics out to the wider community,” Brooke says. “It also presents an opportunity for the elite in the sport, after their extensive years of training in all facets of dance, to do what they love on a commercial stage in front of a much bigger audience, without the pressure of a competition.”
The six-act spectacular explores themes of beauty, artistry, and creation, set across two stages featuring a live orchestra and special effects from Adelaide company Novatech.
Original music composed by Chloe Castledine and David Goodwin of The Cast Score will be brought to life by Chloe’s and JD’s powerful vocals. Triple-threat performer Ayanna Burgan-Minniecon will be among the principal dancers.
This is ACTC’s second annual production, following the success of their inaugural show at the Adelaide Festival Centre. Mother Nature will be held at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Friday, July 4, at 7:30 pm, with tickets ranging from $49 to $189.
A documentary about the rise of calisthenics and a behind-the-scenes look at ACTC, directed by award-winning music video director Rich Coburn, is also in development. Rich has worked with The Hilltop Hoods, A.B. Original, and Elsy Wameyo, among other artists.
