Burst Theatre Company presents Administration, a darkly comedic, one-person show about growing up autistic. Written and performed by Melbourne-based artist Adeline Close, Administration recounts Adeline’s experience growing up in a small-town Catholic school.
Through a series of vignettes, Adeline explores the impact of her environment on self-acceptance. She says the play has “a cathartic element to it: delving into my childhood but being able to laugh at it. As artists/as writers, we are always told ‘write what you know’ and ironically, knowing myself isn’t something I’ve always been able to do.”
The play also looks at how undiagnosed autistic people can be taken advantage of, particularly those assigned female at birth. Adeline says, “there’s a pattern of people…slipping through the cracks, especially if we are able to mask. This was really obvious. How did you not see this?”
Administration runs from March 19–22 at The Mill. An Auslan-interpreted performance is available on March 22.
