Flickerfest returns to The Mercury Cinema for one night on May 9, 2026. The festival celebrates 35 years of short film with two screenings that highlight local talent alongside global cinema.
The 6pm session, Best of Australian Shorts, features five films from South Australian creators. This includes the Oscar-qualified Boy on Fire by Adelaide Hills filmmaker Alies Sluiter and the screenplay award-winner Alpha Test by Stephen Packer. Other local stories on the bill are The Secret by Lilla Berry, The Way of the Wind by Nicholas Burt and Boyish by Scarlett Scherer. Attendees can meet the filmmakers during an interval between sessions while having a complimentary drink.
The 9pm session, Best of International Shorts, brings award-winning works from around the world to the West End. This program includes the Oscar-winning film The Singers and Friend of Dorothy, which features performances by Miriam Margolyes and Stephen Fry. The international selection also marks the directorial debut of Renée Zellweger, alongside films from Indonesia, Germany and the UK.
