This week, photographer Alex Frayne spotlights his friend, vintage fashion enthusiast and endometriosis sufferer Elly Wright.

Photographer Alex Frayne says he sometimes visits his friend Elly Wright to photograph her vintage clothes, but one day he found her in “agony” from endometriosis pain.

Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (called endometrium) grows outside the uterus in other parts of the body. It can cause organs to stick together and result in hospitalisation.

In a series of images, Frayne captured body art by Emma Hack featured on Elly which he said, “foreshadowed a brighter future” for Elly, “one that will result in the removal of her uterus”.

“In mid-2026, I dropped in and [Elly] was in a state of agony,” Frayne said.

“She suffers chronic endometriosis and has endured the full gamut of challenges associated with that condition: sceptical doctors, ruptured fibroids, ambulance ramping and the requirement of fentanyl for pain management.

“Two miscarriages and her age (46) have forced her to accept that she will not give birth.

“The wings of a dragonfly represent a rebirth; after months underwater as an “aquatic nymph”, they emerge, winged and ready for a different life.

“This process is known as ‘Emergence’.”
