Twist after sudden closure of western suburbs theatre
A theatre in a heritage-listed church just outside the city has closed unexpectedly, but the owner has promised the show will go on.
Hindmarsh’s Holden Street Theatres, which is located in a heritage-listed All Saints’ Anglican Church, has closed due to “an unexpected building issue”.
In a statement posted to social media on Wednesday, the theatre said it has decided to close the venue until October 18 while “assessment, maintenance and works are undertaken”.
The venue, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, is a respected institution in Adelaide’s independent theatre community founded by actor and artistic director Martha Lott.
This year’s Adelaide Fringe program including a range of touring and local acts including The Debate, written by and starring Lott herself, and We’ve Been Here Before, by American songwriters Ben Folds and Lindsey Kraft.

The venue’s Facebook post said “These next few weeks, however long they need to be, will give us the opportunity to properly assess what is required, establish the next steps and make plans from there”.
“While this isn’t quite how we expected the next few weeks to look, sometimes an old building needs a little love and attention. We’re taking the opportunity to give Holden Street exactly that,” it said.
“Everyone is safe and well, and we are enormously grateful for the swift support we have received from our landlords, the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, and from Nexstage Staging and Rigging, Novatech Creative Event Technology and FX Rigging, who have helped us put everything in place so that the work can begin.”
When contacted about the closure, owner Lott said she could not provide CityMag with further details about the building damage at this stage, but that “a lot of people are invested in the venue and it reopening soon”.
Holden Street Theatre is due to present its next production, Conor McPherson’s Olivier Award-winning The Weird, in November, led by director-in-residence Nick Fagan.
