As Adelaide’s top brass trade the comfort of their beds for cardboard, photographer Alex Frayne shares an image from his series on Adelaide’s homeless.

CEOs and community leaders will spend Thursday night at Adelaide Zoo for the annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout, trading the comfort of their beds for sleeping bags and cardboard on one of the longest and wettest nights of the year.

Key homelessness advocacy groups said the funds were desperately needed as the cost of living continues to rise, leaving an unprecedented number of people on the brink of homelessness. Charity bosses expect the numbers to rise further in the colder months.

Photographer Alex Frayne captured the city’s grim reality in his Overseers of Streets series, where he photographed Adelaide’s homeless over a period of seven years, including Covid.

Frayne said he was reminded of the writer Philip K Dick, who said about the subjects of his science fiction novel A Scanner Darkly; “This has been a story about people who were punished entirely too much.”

“This series honours those who suffered unthinkable pain,” Frayne said.

Demand for Hutt St Centre’s services has surged 42 per cent in the past four years, with an average of 650 clients accessing the service each month since January this year.

With a goal of $800,000, tonight’s event raises money for vital services across South Australia, including the Vinnies Women’s Crisis Centre, Men’s Crisis Centre, Fred’s Van food service, and tailored support for individuals and families.

InDaily deputy editor David Simmons will be participating in the 2026 Vinnies CEO Sleepout.

Alex Frayne is an Adelaide-based photographic artist and regular contributor to InDaily.
