Adelaide Cabaret Festival is in full swing.

It is the largest celebration of the art form in the world since it was founded in 2001 by Frank Ford, the “godfather” of cabaret and founder of Adelaide’s Fringe Festival.

The festival has drawn many big names, but few were synonymous with 80s cinema like Molly Ringwald, the flame-haired actress who won hearts with her performances in classic ’80s films such as The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink.

In 2013, Ringwald graced the Dunstan Playhouse and an audience of mostly Gen-X and Baby Boomers eager for a hit of nostalgia.

Wearing a body-skimming, backless black gown and vermilion lipstick, Ringwald looked every inch the cabaret star, captured on an infrared camera by Alex Frane for the aptly named ‘Pretty in Pink’.

This year, artistic director Reuben Kaye promises a “delicious revolution” from the festival, which features an eclectic program from works in progress to mainstream hitters like Post Modern Jukebox – the YouTube-famous collective that has racked up hundreds of millions of views and Lime Cordiale.

Adelaide Cabaret Festival is running until June 21.

Alex Frayne is an Adelaide-based photographic artist and regular contributor to InDaily.
