A new festival targeting SA’s soul-music lovers will debut in an intimate SA bar.
Five of Adelaide’s most soulful musicians will play in an intimate Port Adelaide bar this weekend in a bid to grow their “voodoo village” and create a new album.
The live show at Port Adelaide’s 10 Gallon Hat will be fronted by some of the city’s most powerful female vocalists and WOMAD alums, Ms Chipeta and Meena De Silva.
Indie-soul duo Jupiter Saloon, award-winning cabaret artist Leticia Lee, and pop-RnB vocal trio OPULENCE round out the lineup, catering to soul and RnB fans.
Jupiter Saloon guitarist and festival co-producer Nick Pipe said the festival is about growing a soul community and finding a viable model to record with other artists.
Pipe said the artists plan to produce a digital compilation release with selected songs recorded on the night, and crowdfund a vinyl release.
“This is a model that can work well economically for us as independent artists,” Pipe said.
“Soul music naturally sounds great live, so we’re taking advantage of that to record affordably on the spot… and then crowdfunding alleviates the huge upfront cost and risk that we’d otherwise bear to get a vinyl product into the hands of the many fans who love it.”
Pipe said the response so far has been “fantastic” and the artists are excited to build on the appetite for it with the live release.
Ms Chipeta – a Malawian-Australian singer-songwriter – who will headline the Voodoo Village festival, says the event will be a great spot to discover your new favourite artist that’s in Adelaide all year round, not just in Mad March.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of creating events in Adelaide to cater to audiences that love soul and R&B – because it does exist here, not just when touring artists come through,” she says.
Artist Meena De Silva –a Sri Lankan-Australian artist who played WOMAD in 2025 – says she’s excited to play new music on the night and share the stage with the other artists.
“I’m so keen to show off more Adelaide talent and be a part of a merging of artists of such similar genres,” Meena says.
“We’re all such great friends, and part of this incredible community, so surely the best way to celebrate that is to put on a show!
The Voodoo Village Soul Festival is on Saturday, March 18, at 10 Gallon Hat in Port Adelaide.
