Ahead of Beer & BBQ Festival next weekend, CityMag gets to know some of the artists on the lineup and asks them the all important question: beer vs BBQ?
Ryan Underhill is a singer-songwriter, guitarist in Briar Patch Band.
CM: What’s your favourite way to consume music?
Nothing beats live music, of course. I love listening to vinyl on quality headphones, but I also use streaming services. Whether analog or digital, great headphones are essential.
What other artists inspire your style?
Our music and presentation are inspired by ’70s country and rock ‘n’ roll. We draw from Southern rock legends like the Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker Band, and Charlie Daniels, as well as country icons like Waylon Jennings and Hank Williams Jr. We also draw from the modern styles of artists like Chris Stapleton, The Red Clay Strays, and Brothers Osborne.
What’s your favourite Adelaide live music venue to play?
I’d have to say the Wheatsheaf Hotel is an exemplary live music venue! Great room, great stage, great sound, great beer. They’re very supportive of the regional music community.
What three words would you use to describe the atmosphere you want to create at the Beer and BBQ festival?
Rowdy, gritty, fun
Would you rather: Beer or BBQ?
I’ll take the beer. I can make my own BBQ, but I can’t make my own beer.
What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
Ravenously, with a tankard of rum in hand.
What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
Our sound is an absolute hodgepodge of artists that we’ve been exposed to from the 18th century until now. If I were to describe my performance style… Imagine if a pirate ate Iggy Pop in one sitting and then hit the stage directly after the meal.
What’s your favourite Adelaide live music venue to play?
Aye, it’s got to be the Secret Pickle Saloon, which… would ya look at that, just so happens to be where we’re playing at Beer & BBQ fest this year!
If you could describe the atmosphere you want to create at Beer and BBQ in just three words, what would they be?
Grog addled mania.
Beer or BBQ?
Beer.
What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
Nothing beats the live experience. Why stare at your screen when you can pay respects to the music gods in person?
What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
We are inspired by the goth/new wave greats, Mike Pattons various projects and film soundtracks by John Carpenter, Ennio Morricone, David Lynch and Goblin.
What’s your favourite Adelaide live music venue to play?
That’s like asking which of your children is your favourite right? Playing The Wheaty street party “Thebartonia” was definitely a highlight. I urge all punters to head to the next one! Our Mondo hearts will always be great supporters of The Grace Emily, The Cranka, Jive and The Gov.
If you could describe the atmosphere you want to create at Beer and BBQ in just three words, what would they be?
Dystopian, Relentless & cinematic.
Beer or BBQ?
Smokey, delicious BBQ, every damn time. While we thoroughly enjoy libations of the finest ales, we can’t wait to wrap our laughing gear around some ribs!
What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
Live music all the way. I love watching artists in their elements and people’s energies responding.
What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
Recently Saya Gray & Cassandra Jenkins. The detail in production and way it sits in my soul just feels good. I love watching artists that tap into the spiritual realm and seem so fiercely free. Aurora is a magical little bean that seems so free and light on stage.
What’s your favourite Adelaide live music venue to play?
Jive – I’ve played some amazing and memorable shows there.
If you could describe the atmosphere you want to create at Beer and BBQ in just three words, what would they be?
Ambience, Connection, Magic
Beer or BBQ?
I’m usually very food oriented but in this case I’m going to say Beer and shout out some of SA’s lovely breweries: Bowden Brewery, Shapeshifter and Pirate Life!
What’s your favourite way to consume music and why?
My all-time favourite way to consume music is buying a ticket to a performance and rocking up to see the band play live. This way you are supporting the artist by purchasing a ticket, whilst also getting the best performance for you to remember forever.
What other artists inspire your sound or performance style?
Spacey Jane have always been a big one for me since I started writing indie pop/ surf rock music in the way they provide a signature sound in their writing as well as a high-energy live performance. Caleb Harper as a lyricist is very talented and has always inspired me to be more vulnerable with my writing.
An older band that I grew up listening to who are slowly influencing my sound is Australian Crawl, I am a big fan of Guy McDonough’s music not forgetting James Reyne also. My love for these two bands as a major influence stemmed from the fact that they nailed creating their own sound and continue to make a significant impact within Australian music.
Some honourable mentions that still impact my musicianship are Ocean Alley, Rum Jungle, Skegss, Cold Chisel and as of recent, The Moving Stills.
What’s your favourite Adelaide live music venue to play?
I have heaps of places I love to play around Adelaide and many that I wish to play that we have not yet been able to. Based on atmosphere and experiences, I’m going to give the title to the Lion Arts Factory with the Uni Bar at a close second.
The stage layout gives you ample room to move around, the crowds are always lively, and the green room is legendary. Had many great memories at that venue, and I look forward to creating more in the future.
If you could describe the atmosphere you want to create at Beer and BBQ in just three words, what would they be?
Energetic, Vibrant and Welcoming
Beer or BBQ?
Beer. Did a lot of pros and cons for this one and it was a hard choice. The decider for me is that I can have a stage beer and enjoy the taste whilst I perform. Sadly, I would look pretty silly tucking into a nice brisket on stage.
Beer & BBQ Festival is at the Adelaide Showgrounds on the long weekend from June 6-8, it will be its 10th and final year in its current form.
