Immersed in a forest-like oasis, this extensively renovated Norwood townhouse has hit the market with a price tag of more than $3 million.
For Tarnya O’Neil, a chief audit executive, it was the unbeatable location and natural beauty that first drew her to this Norwood property.
“It’s just under two kilometres from the city, has fabulous public transport options and all the amenities that surround the Norwood area, but more particularly, the amazing, mature garden,” Tarnya tells SALIFE.
“Once you walk through the front door, you actually feel like you’re living in a forest in the treetop – it’s absolutely beautiful and that’s what sold it for me.”
Yet although Tarnya loved the property, she wanted to make it her own, and enlisted architect William Valimitis from Urban Habitats to help realise her vision.
“He absolutely nailed an interpretation of what I was looking for and he also brought some alternatives to the table, which turned out to be amazing,” says Tarnya.
“I had high expectations of Urban Habitats, which they delivered on and we ended up with a lovely product, which is a beautiful home to live in.”
Over the next two years, Tarnya entirely rebuilt the home’s interior and upgraded the facade, completing the renovation in November 2023.
Internal walls were moved, the bathrooms were redone and an elevated swimming pool was installed in the backyard.
Among the top main priorities were to preserve the beautiful garden and ensure the facade blended in with surrounding townhouses in the community scheme.
Tarnya tells SALIFE she had gained previous experience renovating apartments while living in New South Wales, giving her an appreciation of contemporary architectural finishes.
“My style drifted into a combination of contemporary finishes with a touch of Art Deco,” she says.
This can be seen in the washboard glass finishes and handmade steel bifold doors in the downstairs area, as well as the Vistosi light fitting over the living room dining table.
Located at 4/121 Kensington Road, Norwood, this townhouse is spread across two floors, with four bedrooms, three bathrooms and space for two cars.
On the lower level, there is a spacious open-plan living and dining area, featuring an entertainer’s kitchen with Marazzi porcelain benchtops, custom-made cabinetry, Falcon Nexus freestanding dual fuel range ovens and an ASKO five-in-one oven.
An adjacent butler’s pantry, also featuring Marazzi porcelain benchtops, includes a Haier 493L refrigerator, a skylight and feature underlighting.
Upstairs, you will find the master suite, with the adjoining walk-in wardrobe and an ensuite with Panaria Ceramica porcelain floor tiles, while a home theatre has the potential to be transformed into a fourth bedroom.
Stepping outdoors into what Tarnya describes as a forest, there are crepe myrtle trees, ginkgoes and gumballs, as well as the elevated plunge pool and a feature pond with a waterfall.
“I love the fact that when you’re upstairs, you’re in the treetop and then when you’re downstairs, because the block drops off, you’re up elevated across the trees and the garden,” Tarnya says.
“It’s quite serene and very surreal because you feel like you’re just out in a forest.”
Although Tarnya loves living at her Norwood oasis, her work has now necessitated a move.
Tarnya says she’ll miss the garden and location most of all.
“The location of the townhouse is at the bottom of the cul-de-sac, so it’s so quiet and you get no noise from Kensington Road at all,” says Tarnya.
“The rear of the block backs onto First Creek and it’s amazing in the winter when you hear the creek running – it gives you the feeling that you’re out in nature.”
The sale of 4/121 Kensington Road, Norwood is being handled by Jamie Brown from Booth Real Estate.
